Happy New Year! ☀

Not to sound like a broken record, but thank you for sticking with us through 2024. I speak for the team when I say that we enjoy finding these stories and bringing them to you. It’s been a privilege.

This year, we’re doubling down on our mission to make sense of money: how Nigerians make, spend, grow, and sometimes lose it. Our goal? To tell honest, relatable stories that spark meaningful conversations about personal finance, open you to possibilities you hadn’t considered, and help you make informed decisions.

There’s something for everyone here, and I hope you find the newsletter even more useful (and fun!) in 2025. How’s that for a manifesto?

Now, let’s kick off the year with the first Naira Life of 2025!

In this letter:

    • The #NairaLife of an Unemployed Graduate Who Isn’t Looking for a Job
    • Tell Us How We Did This Year

  • QUIZ: How Will You Make Money in 2025?
  • Where The Money At?!

The #NairaLife of an Unemployed Graduate Who Isn’t Looking for a Job

This subject may be only 25 years old, but he has several years of experience trying different tricks to make money and has built income opportunities where there were none. However, he hasn’t had a stable income for about three months now, but he’s not bothered. Why?

MoneybyZikoko: Does Black Tax Set You Back? https://www.zikoko.com/newsletters/moneybyzikoko-does-black-tax-set-you-back/ https://www.zikoko.com/newsletters/moneybyzikoko-does-black-tax-set-you-back/#respond Mon, 16 Dec 2024 06:16:15 +0000 https://www.zikoko.com/?p=336837

Volume 111

Good morning, ☀

Black tax will almost always be a critical part of the Nigerian financial experience, and there is not much anyone can do about that. Over the past four years, I’ve heard many stories about this concept, each with a different layer.

But there are a few recurring themes: People (who can) are happy to pay black tax; it could just be a burden they didn’t sign up for. It gets interesting here: everyone deals with it differently or sets different boundaries.

This week’s NairaLife subject hasn’t set a boundary for a long time, and it’s grown into a source of “resentment.” He spent years financially sacrificing his family, only to hit rock bottom when the world shut down in 2020. Now he’s clawing his way back, determined to put himself first—but it’s not as simple as it sounds.

Let’s get into it and the other stories in this dispatch.

    • #NairaLife: The Project Manager Who Can’t Afford to Go Home
    • Love Currency: The Student Getting Emotionally Attached to a Transactional Relationship

  • Where The Money At?!

The #NairaLife of a Project Manager Who Can’t Afford to Go Home

This 32-year-old project manager devoted the first few years of his career to supporting his family. Then he hit a rough patch in 2020 and learned a few things in the process.
Now, he’s completely focused on securing his own future.

Here’s his #NairaLife

Volume 110

Good morning, ☀

I’m not psychic, but I have a strong feeling your answer to the question in today’s email subject was a “Yes”. Feeling broke might be the one thing that connects us all, regardless of our financial situations. At one point or another, we’ve needed something we couldn’t immediately afford.

For the lady in this week’s #NairaLife, it’s financial freedom. At ₦900k/month, she easily qualifies as a top earner in Nigeria, but inflation and the crazy exchange rates mean she has to struggle to afford the things she needs to improve her quality of life.

The content writer in the #LoveCurrency story below is also struggling, but his struggle is of an interestingly different nature. He’s in an open relationship, but with a ₦250k/month salary, it’s clear that his love life might be burning a hole in his pockets.

Let’s get into the stories. 👇🏾

In this letter:

  • #NairaLife: She’s Juggling a 9-5, Two Businesses and Pursuing Foreign Income
  • Love Currency: The Content Writer Navigating an Expensive Open Relationship With ₦250k/Month
  • I Gave My Child Away Because I’m Not Financially Ready To Be a Mother
  • QUIZ: If You Score 10/15 On This December Quiz, You’ll Be Extremely Broke In January
  • Where The Money At?!

#NairaLife: She’s Juggling a 9-5, Two Businesses and Pursuing Foreign Income

Since university, this 28-year-old customer success manager has had no trouble finding creative ways to make money. Is she close to financial freedom? Not exactly. But she hopes that figuring out money management and foreign income opportunities will get her there.

Here’s her #NairaLife

I Gave My Child Away Because I’m Not Financially Ready To Be a Mother

Two years ago, Carmen* (23) gave her newborn baby to a random woman in her neighbourhood and didn’t look back.
